Heatpump Geyser Heating
Heating geyser water is typically the largest cost of energy in home today. An average South African family will spend R5000 or more to heat water every year! A Geyser Heatpump is a heat pump that is designed specifically to heat your geyser water to 55’C using hardly any energy. It makes use of a renewable energy source – the ambient air temperature in a garage, roof, or basement is drawn in through the condenser to heat the water. A standard geyser would typically use a 4000 watt heater element

To prove the cost benefit, please consider the following;
Operational cost of different systems:
Operating cost of electrical geyser:
kWh/L L/day Cost/kWh Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 3 Year Total
0.1153 200 R 0.90 R 7,584 R 9,476 R 11,845 R 28,903
Operating cost of geyser with heatpump:
kWh/L L/day Cost/kWh Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 3 Year Total
0.0258 200 R 0.90 R 1,701 R 2,126 R 2,658 R 6,487
The tables above show yearly operational cost of the two different systems. The first system is a standard 250L electrical geyser.
The second system is the same geyser but with a heatpump connected and the 4kW electrical element disconnected.
(A yearly electrical tariff increase of 25% (as forecasted by Eskom).

Conclusion
-
Your direct saving over a three year period would be R 22 416.
-
This gives you an electrical saving of more than R45000 over a 5 year period.
-
Deduct the cost of R14995.00 (including installation and Vat),
-
You will have a saving of R 7421.00
-
Thus the unit will pay for itself in 2.5 years
